Do You Need To Consider Replacement Windows For Your Home?

by John Mills

House windows perform a number of functions. If any of these aren’t working as intended, you may experience discomfort, frustration and expense as a result. It may be time to consider installing replacement windows to solve the problem.

The first and most obvious purpose of house windows is to let in the light. The use of glass makes this possible. Sometimes windows will be single-pane, as in many older homes, but the newer ones may contain two or three panes in a single frame. Sometimes this glass is coated to add a reflective quality to it and sometimes argon gas is used between the sheets. This increases the insulating value.

Some multiple-paned windows, in time, will start to appear foggy or hazy, which is usually due to a leaky seal. This is an indication that the window has lost some of its energy efficiency. It also looks bad and obscures a clear view. Windows that exhibit this trait should be repaired, or maybe replaced.

Nice looking windows enhance a home’s looks. Ugly ones detract from the home’s appearance. If the style of the windows doesn’t match the style of the house it can look funny. Wood windows on a two hundred year old home just look better than aluminum framed ones. If you’re not happy with the way things look, consider putting in new windows. Your home is your castle. Its appearance should make you feel good about it.

Some frames, especially those made from wood, may eventually start to rot or disintegrate. These will need to be replaced. Wood, while nice looking and a good insulating medium, requires more maintenance than other materials. Some of the newer versions are constructed from maintenance-free PVC, which is a high grade plastic.

Drafty windows are a sure sign that the window is leaking and should be repaired or even replaced. A leaky window is uncomfortable, inefficient and expensive because of the accompanying energy loss. Fixing this problem will cause the house to be warmer during the cold months and cooler during summer. And, the money you save on energy bills can be applied to the cost of the new windows.

Windows that are difficult to operate are frustrating and dangerous. A non-working window could result in someone becoming a victim in the event of a house fire. This should be remedied immediately. Sometimes all it takes is some paint remover and elbow grease. Sometimes this won’t do the trick and replacement windows should be considered. The advice of a window professional could be of help here.
