Calculating The Size Of Storage Unit You Need

by Edna Taylor

It is almost always necessary to use a self storage unit to store your things when you move, downsize or travel for an extended period of time. What are your space requirements?

In case the storage space is not big enough, you’ll need to move up to a larger one and waste time transferring your items. In case it’s too large you will be paying for room you don’t need. The following guidelines should help you figure out what size storage space you require.

- a five foot square unit is equal to 25 square feet of space.

This represents the size of a modest walk-in closet. Five feet is not much room, so only boxes and a few items can be stored here.

- a 5 by 10 foot self storage unit is equal to 50 square feet in size.

The size of this unit is akin to a good size walk-in closet. A few larger items, such as a sofa, bureau and/or mattress set in addition to boxes and other small things, could be stored here. Remember to make the most of your wall and ceiling space by installing shelving.

- a 5 by 15 foot self storage unit equals 75 square feet of space.

All the contents of a studio or small one bedroom apartment could be stored in this size unit. It can hold the belongings of two people who do not have an over abundance of things.

- 10 by 10 foot self storage unit – 100 square feet

This storage space is approximately the size of a normal one car garage. It can accommodate all the contents of a two bedroom apartment, easily holding the possessions of two people; alternatively, it can be used as a garage for storage of a vehicle or small watercraft. You will require a space that opens to the outdoors, as opposed to a corridor, if you wish to use the unit for this purpose.

- a 10 by 15 foot self storage unit is equal to 150 square feet of space.

Larger than a one car garage, all the contents of a three bedroom apartment or home can be stored in this storage space, with room for other items such as motorcycles and exercise equipment.

- 10′ x 20′ self storage unit – 200 square feet

This size is nearly the same as a garage for two vehicles. It might be put to use storing an automobile, pickup, boat or motor home, along with furniture and crates. This storage unit can accommodate the contents of a medium-sized home or apartment with room to spare. This size is ideal for households with four or more members.
