Easy Ways to Unclog Your Bathroom Sink By Yourself
Bathroom sinks tend to clog more than other sinks in your home. This can partly be true due to the large amount of hair that falls through the sink. Here are some steps you should take if you find your bathroom sink won’t drain properly.
Use a plungers to unclog a minor problem. Try this first, since it doesn’t require you to take the sink apart. Add some water to the sink bowl, and then plunge.
Use a force cup plunger and plunge up and down three or four times before stopping. Lift the plunger up to see if the water has drained yet. If that solved the problem, run the faucet for a few minutes to see if it gets clogged again.
If the sink is still clogged you will need to dismantle the sink trap. You will be dismantling the p-trap. A p-trap is the pipe that dips low and then curves.
When you find the p-trap, use a pipe wrench to take it apart. The easiest way is to unscrew the nuts on the sides. Be sure to have a bucket handy to catch all the grime that will come out.
After the trap is taken off, your next step will be to clean out the trap. The trap will be full of grime and slush that never got a chance to go through the pipe. Clean the inside of the p-trap with a cleaning brush and clean out all the large pieces that could possibly be a clog hazard.
After you reattach the trap, see if the sink still has issues of being clogged. If it does, the odds are that the clog is further down in the piping. If that is the case, you should use a plumber snake that is less than 25 feet to unclog the sink.
When snaking a sink wear protective gloves. Run the snake downwards, and move it through the pipeline more than once to be sure the clog has been dislodged. If you have reassembled the p-trap and the sink is still not working, you can repeat the process or call a professional to check it out.
