How To Choose The Best Rustic Furniture For Your Home

by Woody Z Kilespowski

Rustic cabin furniture is becoming more and more popular every day. In fact, it is becoming so popular that when purchasing it, you have to be very careful of rip off artists that are trying to cash in on the latest fad. The last thing you need is thinking you are bringing home The Mona Lisa only to find out all you have is a rotten wood that should have went into the scrap pile.

Country furniture is composed mostly of wood. That being the case, unless you are educated on wear and other related conditions of wood, you better not go shopping alone. Bring someone with you or do some serious reading and research on the topic to make sure you have an idea as to what to look for.

If furniture is made shoddy, it will not have quality corner blocking. Corner blocking should be very evident in the construction and ensures that your item is supported properly and put together well. Without it, your item very well may fall apart at any moment there is pressure or weight put on an unsupported area.

Something that you are going to want to immediately check is the rear construction of the furniture. Quality items will feature screws and nails in the back that make the backing an integral part of your furniture. If the item is put together with staples, forget about it and move onto the next item.

You will also want to check the finish on the piece. Quality finishes on furniture are a multi-step purpose and take quite some time. If the piece only has one coat or looks to have been cheaply done, again, move on. If no care was taken in a step that is so obvious, it is likely the rest of it was treated in the same manner.

You should always check the alignment of the drawers to make sure they are flush and smooth rolling. This can lead to several problems down the road the least of which is damaging your clothing. There is nothing worse than having a drawer stick to an article of clothing only to have you playing tug of war with the drawer and then eventually destroying whatever piece it was that got jammed in there because it was misaligned.

While furniture is always made square or boxed, it should have quality levelers on the bottom of the legs. As we all know, houses shift, are built on hills, settle, etc., which means that over time, your furniture may be in a position where it will have to be adjusted. If it does not have a quality leveler installed, you are going to have a piece that will be on an angle and could end up being unsafe or end up getting damaged.

Looking for rustic furniture is obviously not something that you should take lightly. Learn what to look for or bring a friend that knows the business and make it a successful journey that leads to you bringing home a beautiful piece that you will be happy you purchased it.
