Coffee Tables Aren’t Just for Feet

by Rod Ernest

Coffee tables aren’t just for feet, even though they make a great place to prop them up. They give your living room or family room a sense of intimacy and coziness. For instance, in rooms that are oversized, placing coffee-tables near a couple chairs and a sofa creates a smaller seating area that makes the room more relaxed and lived in.

Because they highlight, or accentuate, a room’s theme, they are sometimes known as accent tables. If a living room has a heavy country theme, coffee tables can hold baskets, bears, or other country decor items. They can also hold art pieces or knick knacks that keep with the country air. Because of this ability to highlight a room’s theme, coffee tables can complete a room’s decor.

A coffee table doesn’t have to be placed in front of a sofa; it can also be used as an end table. A room needs a considerable amount of space to have a table in front of a sofa or a couple chairs; some living rooms or family rooms may not be that big. As an end table, there’s no need for the extra space. Plus, if someone wants extra lighting, a lamp placed on an end table is very convenient.

It might be hard choosing a table for your room because there is such a wide offering of styles. Matching the rest of the room’s decor should be foremost; you can’t go wrong doing that. If a room has splashy and bold colors, the end table should be just as bold, in a color that matches.

On the other hand, if you’re purchasing the coffee table for a room that is filled with softer forms and more muted colors, the angled, boldly colored coffee-tables won’t fit at all. Instead, you should stick with a table that has more rounded edges and a softer color. Also keep in mind the materials used, such as wood or chrome. Choose the same key materials for your tables as what’s in your main dcor items and furniture.

Looks aren’t the only thing coffee tables add to your room. They can also serve as storage or organizational areas. While coffee tables sit low to the ground, they often have a drawer or two underneath them for storage. Some look like a shelving unit, with smaller shelves on each side for you to place items. If you need more storage area, consider an old style trunk to stow away seasonally used blankets, linens, and the like.

Because of the popularity of coffee tables, a whole book genre has been created: the coffee table book. These books are larger than the normal book because they’re pictorial in nature. While they don’t provide any in depth reading material, they are enjoyable nonetheless. This is because they are works of art, with the cover being worthy of framing. Because of this, the coffee table book is displayed prominently on many tables.

Coffee tables are also comfortable – for your feet, that is. Many people want to sink into a soft sofa or chair and prop their feet up on a coffee table after a long and hard day. Such a position is great for unwinding or watching TV. Just be careful not to knock over any of the home decor items placed on your accent table!

Coffee tables are an important part of a living room’s or family room’s decor. They offer style and can be quite functional. Consider the theme of your room before deciding on the coffee tables of your choice. If you want them to serve as storage units or hold reading lamps, coffee tables will fit the bill. When you give thought and consideration to this decision, your coffee tables will enhance the comfort level and style of your room.
