Find A Focal Point
A focal decorative piece makes a living space more attractive. It gives a room a prominent design. This focal point can be a large furniture, an accessory, a wall hanging or a floor covering.
There are some furnishings that without effort can be an instant focal point. A perfect example is the fireplace. It becomes an automatic center of attention even without any work done. For more appeal however, add items that will complement it. Examples are artworks, souvenir items and collectibles hanged above or placed on top of the fireplace.
The bed is another effortless focal point as it is also the basic furnishing in a bedroom. The bed’s size, beddings and its drapes if any, can highlight it as the bedroom’s focal piece. Adding other embellishments like large plants behind the bed, colorful flowers on the bedside table, dim light focused on the bed or a decorative screen can seal its role as the room’s centerpiece.
In the living room the first thing most people will notice is the TV. If you choose to use your TV or entertainment center as a focal point then this will be a very simple job. Decorate the area with your favorite accessories and your job is done. If you would rather pick a different focal point you will need to hide the television. The easiest way to do this is to buy an entertainment center that closes up to look like a simple cabinet. This piece will look nice, without drawing attention away from your focal point.
The thing to remember is that a focal point is not necessarily determined because of its size. Of course, the bigger an object is, the more conspicuous it becomes. But any item that is attractive, unique or eye-catching can be an instant focal point. Even a window with pretty drapes and a beautiful view can outrun an expensive oversized china vase. Focal point is about where your eyes dart the instant they lay eyes on the room. A framed photograph can be more interesting than a painting; a vase of exotic flowers can be more eye-catching than a large sofa. If presented properly and placed strategically, you can have your room’s main attraction in a snap.
An area rug can also be a room’s focal point. Moreover, it can also be an effective accent to a room’s attraction. As a focal piece, the area rug must hold on its own, with eye-catching details, color or pattern. The best area is to position it in the center of the room. Geometrical design and bright colors instantly attract attention. As an accent, place the area rug in near proximity of the centerpiece. It can be under, directly in front of or above the object. The colors should fit together and the size should also suit properly.
Focal point is a great way to make any room look more beautiful. Together with other furnishings and accessories, a room will look very put together.
